Avatar comprehensibility - Better expressions & lighting

20251030 Europäischer Protesttag

Comprehensibility of the avatar – ensuring quality
To ensure optimal comprehensibility of our avatar “Livian”, we place great importance on body language, gestures, and facial expressions in terms of expressiveness, emotionality/friendliness, synchronicity, accuracy, playback speed, and lighting/contrast. Surveys of basic research with over 300 deaf people confirm a similar comprehensibility to human videos. This is consistent with positive feedback from local deaf people in communities in North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Hamburg:

Improved facial expressions and lighting – even more understandable and friendly
An adjusted eyebrow shape and greater distance to the eyes give our avatar “Livian” a more relaxed, friendly basic expression. Color adjustments make the face appear more lifelike. Optimized lighting includes softer shadows, reduced light sources for more definition, stronger light-shadow contrast, enhanced highlights, and less reflection on clothing:
